On Sunday, August 25, 2024, Brother Freddie Reid Jones, 92, of Richmond, VA, answered the call to return home to rest with the King. He passed away at Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Richmond, VA.
Brother Jones was born July 7, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, VA, to the late Charlie and Minnie Adams Jones. Freddie was married to the late Shirley Ann Davis Jones for 66 years.
He professed his faith in Christ and was baptized at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Blairs, VA, where he sang with the Male Chorus until he relocated to Richmond, VA in 2012. After relocating to Richmond, VA, he continued worshipping the Lord at Broad Rock Baptist Church.
Brother Jones obtained his education in the Pittsylvania County School System. He was drafted to the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War. He was a hard-working man, who was known for working with his hands. He served as a master brick mason at Roy Younger and Company. He also worked as a heavy equipment operator at Thompson-Arthur Paving Company. He was later employed at Times Fiber Communications, where he retired. He built brick mailboxes, worked on cars and drove motorcycles in his spare time. Brother Jones was a member of the Guild field Masonic Lodge.
Those left to cherish his memory are: two sons, Freddie Jones, Sr. (Brenda) of South Hill, VA, and Michael Jones, Sr. (Gail) of Chesterfield, VA; three daughters, Freda Hardy (Curtis) and Sherry Staples, both of Richmond, VA, and Melissa Jones-Cross (Derek) of Greensboro, NC; two brothers, Therman Jones (Eleanor) of Salina, KS, and Reverend Nathaniel Jones of Blairs, VA; one sister, Geraldine Hunt of Blairs, VA.; one brother-in-law, John Davis of Staunton, VA; and three sisters-in-law, Jean Jones of Blairs, VA, Margo Jones of Orange, VA, and Betty Davis of Dry Fork, VA, and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Brother Jones was predeceased by one son, Edward Jones; two brothers, Herman Jones and Reverend Floyd Jones, Sr.; and three sisters, Elizabeth Bennett, Frances Bennett, and Elsie King.
The family has entrusted Wilson Funeral Service and Cremation with final arrangements. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, August 31, at 12 noon at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Reginald Carter, Eulogist. A viewing will be held 30 minutes prior to the service.
